Spell Options 1 - Fireball

For many a seasoned adventurer and explorer, magic can become, whilst still a useful tool, boring. You know what a certain spell is effective for, or how potent you need to be to use the spell found on a scroll.

The Spell Options series is a way of tweaking existing spells without using feats. You can change the color, make the spell weaker and thus easier to cast or make them more powerful but unstable.

Each volume of the Spell Options series gives you ways of tweaking spells to make them more varied.
Inside you'll find :-

  • Basic and simple core rules or tweaking spells
  • Optional rules for when you want to use this system, but feel it is a bit overpowered

The Spell Options system tweaks spells, but at a cost in spell levels. Assuming you know the spell in the first place you can then customize it in one of three ways: Cosmetic, Beneficial, and Penalties.

  • Cosmetic Changes change the way a spell looks. These options do not cost SL.
  • Benefits make increases the spells potency, but make it harder to cast.
  • Penalties reduce the potency of the spell in some way but make it easier or less draining to cast.

These can be combined in various ways to turn an "ordinary" spell into something that makes your opponent go "Wait..just what spell is it they are casting?"

Village Backdrop: Greystone (SNE)Publisher: Raging Swan Press

A System Neutral Edition Roleplaying Game GM’s Resource supplement by Creighton Broadhurst

Civilisation’s creeping tendrils did not linger long upon the vertiginous bulk of the Mottled Spire. A century ago, settlers from Languard founded Greystone as a fishing village and rebuilt the shattered ruin of the Shard as a lighthouse and watchtower. However, the harsh weather, isolation and events of a certain terror-filled night doomed their efforts to failure. A nameless aura of fear and decay now hangs over the crumbling, wind-blasted ruins. Seemingly perpetually shrouded in shadow, dark legends cluster thickly about the village. Stories of ghoulish hauntings, a sinister cult and myths of the degenerate, inbred survivors of the original settlers lurking amid the ruins along with the village’s isolated position, conspire to keep decent folk away.

Village Backdrops are short, richly detailed supplements that each present a single village ready to insert into almost any home campaign. Perfect for use as a waystop on the road to adventure, as an adventure site themselves or as a PC’s home, Village Backdrop present the details so the busy GM can focus on crafting exciting, compelling adventures.

The Defeated DeadPublisher: Rogue Games, Inc

The American Revolution is over, and the colonies are now coming to terms with the aftermath. Creating a government is messy, but messier still is the call to expand the boarders of the young nation. As Americans moved out west for land, tensions between the natives and Americans reached an all time high in the region of the Old Northwest, part of which was to become the state of Ohio.

It was on a cold morning on November 4, 1791, when the U.S. Army met its’ greatest defeat. Now, three years later, efforts are underway to build a new fort on the site of St. Clair's Defeat. Much to the surprise to everyone, this is easier said than done. Numerous problems plague the construction, and rumors of the British spurring the Native Tribes in actions against the United States are spreading. With no one to spare, President Washington is looking for answers.

What no one knows is that the dead of Fort Recovery want their vengeance. Betrayed by the military, the soldiers were led to their death at the hands of a Indian uprising. In death, and unable to pass on, they now haunt the battlefield where they met their doom.

Set in the Northwestern Territories,
The Defeated Dead is a new adventure designed for Colonial Gothic. Included are details of the Ohio Territories, as well as some of the most important forts located there.

So the question remains: can you bring peace to the dead?

Sidebar #30 - Skeleton Tricks!

Skeletons are the most basic of undead: More sanitary than zombies, less dangerous than ghouls and wights, mostly only useful as part of an undead horde; razing a village without mercy or guarding an ancient miasma choked tomb.

Or are they? Because of the simplistic nature of a skeletons design, they can be modified in many subtle ways to make the optimal use of their bony frames, and their light forms make them very easy to put in places that you wouldn’t expect, making them even more versatile.

Make no bones about it, any aspiring necromancer would not want to pass up trying these skeletal modifications. Your enemies will hate them a Skeleton!

Enjoy the new feat known as Skeleton Tricks! This feat, coupled with skills and other feats from the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game will breath new "death" into your skeletal minions!

The Sidebar product line brings you an assortment of ideas, homebrew rules, and various options from the talented pool of writers at Fat Goblin Games for use with the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game. These short and low-priced products are perfect for Game Masters and Players who want to integrate unique new options to their games.

Deep Background: Character Backstories for the Cypher SystemPublisher: Monte Cook Games

So the GM is offering the players bonus XP if they write up a backstory for their characters and you want to tell him to go to hell with or without the handbasket.  ("And give Beelzebub a smooch when you get there!")

But then again, you really want that bonus XP.  What to do?

You choose one of the following backstories culled from literature, cinema, television, and comic books.  Some of them are obvious (d'Artagnan, Hercules) and some are esoteric (Mr. Toad, Detective McNulty) but each of them grants your characters a head start toward campaign immortality.

As with anything else, you should get your GM's permission to play any of these backstories but feel free to remind the GM that his campaign only exists for the player's entertainment and edification, not the other way around.  Tell him gently.

Unless we counted wrong, there are 76 unique character backgrounds, along with more than a dozen variant descriptors, lists of genre-specific character connections, and a new rule for character hooks, which are GM Intrusions inspired by your own character's moral or psychological weaknesses.

Mini-Dungeon #044: The Ascent of Tempest TowerPublisher: AAW Games

For 3-4 Level 20 Characters

Tempest Tower is a spire that reaches skyward from an expanse of open plains. The stone monument rises nearly 100-feet above mostly-featureless terrain. At its apex swirls a maelstrom of storm clouds that extend half-a-mile from the center. The landscape directly below is speckled with small craters and charred vegetation from frequent lightning strikes. The sound of rolling thunder is near constant and can be heard for miles in every direction.

The tower was constructed eons past to bind a powerful monstrosity from the elemental plain of air known as the Storm Song which once roamed across these lands, consuming the greenery and the earth in which it was rooted – creating the vast, featureless plains that now exists.
